I Hate French Wine

By Leticia Borges. The way in which the French approach wine is complicated.  If all you want is a nice wine to go with your lovely meal, why does it feel like you must memorize the lineage of every Chateau in Bordeaux dating back to 1389?  A normmelier trying to find a bottle of French wine shouldn’t

Not All Bubbles Are Created Equal

By Leticia Borges. Every Borges family celebration I can remember involved a cork popping. To this day, that sound still makes me smile. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations and engagements were occasions to cheer, but our family finances restricted us to beverages we could afford. That’s where Spanish sparkling cider came into play. We could always count on that

Big Isn’t Always Better

By Leticia Borges. There’s much to be said about big wineries that produce massive amounts of wine per year. Unfortunately, not all of it is good. Small production wineries may lack the big brand names but often produce much better wine. The problem is that they also lack the massive marketing machinery to get their wines out there

Is Wine Arrogant?

About

A sommelier and a regular guy walk into a bar. The sommelier asks the bartender for his best wine. The bartender pours two glasses.  The sommelier  looks at the wine against the light, swirls the wine, looks again, closes his eyes and takes a long whiff, swirls, smells, tastes and says “this wine has soft tannins and aromas of juicy, black cherries, plums, chocolate and flowers. On the palate, I detect tobacco and other earthy characteristics. Undoubtedly, it’s a right bank Bordeaux of Saint-Émilion. 2004 vintage.”  The regular guy looks at the wine against the light, swirls the wine, looks again, closes his eyes and takes a long whiff, swirls, smells, tastes and says “Yes.  It’s wine, it’s red. I like it”

At Wine Pivot we believe that wine can be enjoyed, without much fuss, by someone without an unpronounceable French title or the nose of a bloodhound. We welcome the regular person wanting to enjoy a less intimidating experience with wine.  We celebrate normal people who believe that wine is just another way to build memories and share moments. We call them “norm-meliers”.
